The Scene • Mary Jane climbs down from Spider-Man along the cable to the cable car • The Green Goblin attacks Spider-Man, causing him to drop the cable • When Spider-Man grabs the cable again, Mary Jane falls and then grabs onto the edge of the car’s roof.
The Physics • It would be impossible for her to hold on to the car after falling from such a distance.
Calculations: Falling Distance • Estimated cable car height ≈ 3.15 m • On screen car height = 0.0102 m • Fall distance on screen = 0.0450 m }3.15 m
Calculations: Falling Distance • 3.15m / 0.0102m = X / 0.0450m • X = 13.91m falling distance • ≈ 45.59ft.About 3-4 stories MaryJane 13.91 m
Calculations: Impact Force • Kirsten Dunst’s est. weight = 120 lbs. ≈ 54.48 kg • F=ma=(54.48kg)(9.81m/s2) = 534.45N ≈ 120 lbs. force
Impact Force • Average female hands can handle about 92 lbs. of force • “It takes nine or 10 pounds of force to dislocate a shoulder”
Calculations: Terminal Velocity • Estimated time of fall ≈ (8.65s)/2 + 1.56s = 5.885 s • Free-Fall • vf=at=9.81m/s2(5.885s)= ≈ 129 mph • Sky-diving without a parachute 57.73 m/s (slow motion)/2 = real time
___Conclusion • It’s impossible for Mary Jane to hold on to the roof of the cable car after falling from such a distance. • If she could she would at least sustain serious personal injuries.
