  1. How to Write More More often, more detail, more elaboration

  2. How to write about anything, anytime, anywhere • Think, think, think about the topic or task at hand and write whatever comes to mind • Use pre-writing strategies to help you get started: • Brainstorm • Sketch • Freewrite • Discuss it with someone • Consult another source to find out what it is, if needed

  3. Let’s try an example throughout this show, a fun one… Write about TWERKING

  4. How to Begin • Start by writing what you can about the topic • Think about the 5 Ws – who, what, where, when, why & how • Add to it by stating your opinion • Use the PPE method of development (make a point, prove it, develop it

  5. Strategy 1:Visualize Create a mental image of the topic, and write what you see Put yourself in the situation and think about sensations (what you see, hear, taste, touch, & smell)

  6. Strategy 2:Elaborate on Details Remember to “show” and not just “tell” Instead of making statements, describe them Describe action, physical states (setting) & internal states (feelings) Example: The singer was twerking. Rihanna was bouncing rhythmically jiving on stage, her derriere rapidly flapping to the beat.

  7. Strategy 3:Provide Examples If what you have written is too brief, use examples to elaborate

  8. Strategy 4:Make Connections When you get stuck, think about how you connect to the issue Where have seen/heard about it? What does it remind you of? What does it make you think about? Have you experienced it in your own life? What’s its role in popular culture?

  9. Strategy 5:Question Ask questions about the topic. Question the topic itself

  10. Strategy 6:Add Quotations If or when you have the opportunity, and it will benefit your message, add quotes that support or speak to the topic

  11. Strategy 7:Be Imaginative Depending on the topic, use your imagination. Be creative, innovative, original – think outside the box!

  12. Demonstrate Persistence! • With any task you are given, your success depends greatly on your ability to be persistent, to work hard, and, essentially, to care about what you are doing. • If you do not care about the topic, care about your success, and work with it. You can write about anything, if you truly WANT to.

  13. Your task… Develop a notebook activity for your class
