  2. D.0.L. Please write the following sentences in your class folder. We will correct them together as a class. I dont under stand why we need to learn how to right an business letter. If you ask me I think their just plaine boring. Maybe if Miss Dargavel teaches us how to apply it to real lives than I might actually learned something!

  3. Why Learn This??? • It’s one of the essay styles you might be asked to write for the CAHSEE in 10th grade. • You need to use it whenever a situation calls for formal correspondence • Letter of request • Formal complaint • Applying for a job • Transmitting ideas or suggestions

Parts of a Business Letter • HEADING • Consists of 2 parts: Your address and the date • INSIDE ADDRESS • The reader’s name (make sure you spell it correctly!), their official title, company/department, and their address • For example: Mrs. Pita Dargavel, Language Arts Teacher Eleanor Roosevelt High School 7447 Scholar Way Eastvale, CA. 92880

  6. Parts of a Business Letter • SALUTATION • The greeting (Dear _________: ) • Notice the use of a colon (:) instead of a comma! • BODY • The purpose of the letter • Usually consists of 3 short paragraphs; introduction, body, and conclusion.

Parts of a Business Letter • BODY (continued) • Introduction: State your name and purpose (WHY) • Body: Explain what you want (WHAT) • Conclusion: Thank you and contact info/number • COMPLIMENTARY CLOSING • Polite close to the letter followed by a comma • Sincerely, Yours truly, Yours sincerely, etc.

  8. Parts of a Business Letter • SIGNATURE • Sign your letter personally, then type your name • OPTIONAL • Enclosures: document, brochure, copy of receipt, resume • Copies: if the letter is also being sent to other people • Cc: carbon copy

Formatting the Business Letter • Business letters should be written on 8 ½ x 11 unlined, white paper • Use 1” margins on all sides • Use a serif font such as Times New Roman (12 pt) Or Georgia (11 pt) • Should be single-spaced and, if possible, typed • Justify your letter on the left side (this is called the “block” format)

  10. Spacing the Business Letter 4 SPACES 2 SPACES 2 SPACES 2 SPACES BETWEEN EACH PARAGRAPH 4 SPACES NOTE: If you’re going to add any enclosures, skip 2 SPACES after your typed name. If you only have one, simply type “Enclosure.” If it’s plural, type “Enclosures,” followed by the number of enclosures you’re including. Enclosures (3)

  11. Assignment • Choose a piece of technology that you are very familiar with and enjoy using. Identify a few things that would make this item even better than it already is. • Your business letter will consist of you sharing your ideas with the CEO/President of the company. • Remember, this is not an essay, it is a SHORT letter!!! • Good luck and have fun!
