Integrating Coatings Into TACOM’s Mission ANNA WOJCIECHOWSKI Tom Landy Carl Handsy U.S ARMY TACOM - TARDEC WARREN, MI 48397-5000 (810)574-5954 Tank-automotive & Armaments COMmand Committed to Excellence
TACOM Project Objectives for Coatings Application • Spray straight out of the can low VOC coating using CO2 spray system. • 2.2 lbs/gal VOC coating will be demonstrated long term using CO2. • Transfer technology to DoD sites. • Select and demonstrate complete coating system using CO2. • Formulate CARC of commercial value with 1.0 lb/gal VOC - goal.
P2 and More • Environmental regulations are becoming more stringent. • Price of non-Compliance is very high. • Current coatings generate considerable emissions. • Readiness. • Waterborne and powder coatings may be considerably more expensive.
Program to Date • Two or three sites preparing to start up long term demonstration / validation of the low VOC coating application using CO2. • Reformulated 2.8 lbs/gal VOC CARC paint sprayed through CO2 spray system on Army trailers. • 2.2 lbs/gal VOC passed chemical agent resistance. • Continue partnering with DoD low VOC Coatings Application Work Group.
Conclusions 1. CARC with 2.8 lbs/gal VOC sprayed successfully using UNICARB system. 2. Reduction in emissions measured during RIA demonstration at 78%. 3. Fewer passes needed to paint to desired coating thickness. 4. About 60% less paint used during RIA demonstration. 5. Importance of team work.
