Historical Background • Text written and adapted by John Jacob Niles • Text from Cherokee County, North Carolina • 1938 • Lyrics and music both have a sorrowful feeling • Lyrics are heartbreaking and music portrays sadness
Excerpt of Text Oh, he was a lord of high degree, And she was a lass from the Low Countree, But she loved his lordship so tenderly, Oh sorrow, sing sorrow! Now she sleeps in the valley where the wild flowers nod, And no one knows she loved him but herself and God. This part is the first verse in the song. It tells us that a poor girl falls in love with a king but he doesn’t pay any attention to her because of her status. I think the line “Now she sleeps in the valley where the wild flowers nod” tells us that this poor girl died without anyone knowing about her love for the king.
Musical Analysis • B Minor • No accidentals • The music and text are related because the lyrics tell us a tragic love story and the music is repetitive and gives off a sad feeling.
Why I like this piece... • Gives off a sad feel, but it sticks out to me • Not something I would’ve picked out for myself • Tells a story • Beautiful sound
