Explicitness and Inference. EXPLICIT. If something is EXPLICIT, it’s very clear and we don’t need to work it out. If it’s raining, it’s EXPLICIT that people outside are getting wet. INFERRED. If something is INFERRED, we work it out from what we know for sure.

EXPLICIT If something is EXPLICIT, it’s very clear and we don’t need to work it out.
If it’s raining, it’s EXPLICIT that people outside are getting wet.
INFERRED If something is INFERRED, we work it out from what we know for sure. We often call INFERENCE, ‘reading between the lines’.
Some INFERENCES are easy. If the sky goes grey, we can INFER it will rain soon.
Other inferences are more difficult. If a girl has her hands in her pockets…
…or some details about the rest of the scene,… … or knowledge of what’s just happened before.
