  1. Colloidal Polymerization of Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles into Cobalt Oxide NanowiresJeffrey Pyun, University of Arizona, DMR 0742224 TEM PS-CoNPs TEM PS-Co3O4 Nanowires There is considerable interest in using nanoparticles as “Colloidal Molecules”. The N-S dipole of polystyrene coated ferromagnetic cobalt nanoparticles (PS-CoNPs) enables colloidal assembly similar to AB monomers in step-growth polymerizations. Oxidation of PS-CoNPs dispersed in 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB) resulted in formation of interconnected cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanowires coated with PS due to the Kirkendall effect. We refer to this process as a “Colloidal Polymerization”, since metal nanoparticle “monomers” are oxidized into 1-D “polymers” of Co3O4 nanowires. We are pursuing potential applications of these materials for magnetically assembled cobalt oxide nano-electrodes for Li-batteries. 100 nm

Colloidal Polymerization of Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles into Cobalt Oxide NanowiresJeffrey Pyun, University of Arizona,DMR 0742224 Outreach: A high school student and teacher (Michael Ortiz and Dr. Gretchen Graef) from the Tucson Urban Academy have been doing a 4-wk summer internship in the PI’s laboratories. The PI has been actively involved with faculty and students at the Tucson Urban Academy which provides free education to children and families of minorities from impoverished neighborhoods of south Tucson. Workshops on electron microscopy have also been coordinated with other high school outreach efforts from NSF-funded CRC efforts in the Chemistry Department at the University of Arizona Education: Funding from this NSF-CAREER award has enabled support of three graduate students, Bryan Korth (4th-yr), Pei Keng (4th-yr) and Sarah Rasmussen (2nd-yr). Two undergraduates, Mathew Bull (University of Arizona) and Jared Gabriel (Case Western) have also been working on this project as summer interns. Bryan Korth and Pei Keng have presented posters at the Polymers East Gordon Conference-Summer 2007 and at the National ACS Meeting-March 2008, New Orleans. Pyun Group-2008
