Paraphrasing… A good paraphrase should • have the same meaning as the original • but not sound like the original • only have 3-4 words the same as the original Paraphrasing is not easy…it takes practice!
Steps in paraphrasing… Read the original carefully Close the book/screen window while you write your own explanation Check your sentence against the original Cite the source

Why do we teach this? • Because if you’re copying from others, you’re not learning & thinking for yourself • Because there are consequences for dishonesty: -You fail the paper or the whole class -You get expelled (yes it has happened at our school!) -Your academic reputation suffers -You won’t get into any other good schools
