  4. Are the Gallaudet Protests about: • Jane K. Fernandes? • Irving K. Jordan? • Oral Deaf? • ASL Deaf? • CI Deaf? • Non-ASL Deaf? • Deaf people of color? NO!

  6. Frederick Douglass • From My Bondage and My Freedom • Tries to show that slavery corrupted, dehumanized, and victimized EVERYONE – including SLAVEHOLDERS! The changes in Mrs. Auld’s behavior toward young Douglass. Changed Frederick’s life.

  7. Frederick Douglass • Perhaps the most famous American leader in the 19th century for human rights. • He spoke against job discrimination, segregation, voting rights for women, • Is a model for ALL those who fight for injustice.

  8. Robert Panara • Has fought for a long time to have Dummy Hoy to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. • Has a collection of solid evidence showing that Hoy should belong in the Hall of Fame. • Hoy is robbed of the honors he truly deserves. Why?

  9. Civil Disobedience • The U.S. has a long history on this issue, going back to the time of Henry David Thoreau. He spoke against too much government. Resisted paying taxes. He was also disgusted about slavery and the Mexican-American War.

  10. The Gallaudet Protests: • Are about social justice for EVERYONE in the Deaf community. • Involved civil disobedience in attempt to address social injustice. • Black Friday, October 13, 2006: The arrests of over 130 individuals • Before the arrests: ~30 Tent Cities • One week after the arrests: 63 Tent Cities!
