Phloem Functions Structure • Transporting nutrients, particularly sucrose, from where it’s made to all the parts of the plant where needed • Composed of living cells as opposed to xylem • Contains sieve tubes and companion cells • Sieve tubes: no nucleus, has everything else • Companion cells: a typically plant cell with more ribosomes and mitochondria • The two are connected and the companion cells keeps the sieve tubes alive
