***Directions: Paraphrase the following information on a sheet of notebook paper.*** The five original Iroquois nations united to establish peace and to protect “life, property, and liberty.” Their constitution, “Great Law of Peace,” is considered the world’s oldest and influenced the U.S. Constitution and the founding charter of the United Nations.Today most of the Iroquois live in New York and Canada. Some groups can be found in Wisconsin and Oklahoma. Iroquois family history is traced through the mother’s family. Throughout their history, women have owned property and have been treated as near equals with men. The Iroquois have a strong oral tradition.
