The principles of VP • VP is the phrase which refers to the verb becoming the head. • Verb in VP is the element which determines the properties of the whole phrase.
Testing VP element Let see the following expression: The student_____VP_____. The expressions that can occur in the VP letters position might be filled by: snored; ran; sang; loved music; walked the dog through the park; lifted 50 pounds; thought Tom is honest; warned us that storms were coming.
Basic constituent of VP • VP is constituted by VP V + NP • VP is constituted by VP V+ PP • VP is constituted by VP V (Aux) + VP + AP This simple VP rule says that a VP can consist of an obligatory V followed by an optional NPand then an optional PP or an optional AP. VP VP VNPPP read a book outside
Testing grammatical S with VP We can also observe that the presence of a VP is essential in forming a grammatical Sentence. a. The monkey wants to leave the meeting. b. *The monkey eager to leave the meeting. c. The men practice medicine. d. *The men doctors of medicine. When you test these sentences with VP syntactic tree, sentences A and C is grammatical forms, but those of B and D is ungrammatical ones.
