  1. Networking on Windows 2000 BICS 565

  2. NetBEUI • NetBEUI • NetBIOS Enhanced User Interface • Developed by IBM and adopted by Novell and Microsoft. • Small Microsoft based LANs • Not routable; cannot use for WAN

  3. IPX/SPX • Novell’s networking protocol • Microsoft uses a version of IPX/SPX called NWLink • IPX/SPX uses MAC addresses; it is routable • Only routable internally; not supported on the Internet

  4. TCP/IP • You don’t need another slide on TCP/IP. • We have done enough from the Panko Book. • Just don’t forget the layers. • All Internet stuff runs on TCP/IP • Famous Quote: TCP makes the IP go around.

  5. Services • Applications that run on a server • Applications that serve requests from clients • Popular services: WWW, FTP, Telnet, NNTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP4, SNMP, SNTP, NTP, and many others. • Look in book on page 219 for details on how to set up services in Windows 2000

  6. IP Routing • Routers use IP addresses and Masks to route IP packets • Routing Table • Static Routing • Dynamic Routing • RIP, OSPF, MOSPF etc.

  7. Remote Access • Remotely connect to a Windows 2000 server using any of the following: • NetBEUI • TCP/IP • AppleTalk RAP • NWLink • VPNs are also supported • PP Tunneling and Layer Two Tunneling (IPSec)
