Causes of the Revolution Notes Miss Springborn
Question… • Why do you think colonists would have been angry at England during the colonial period? • Navigation Acts controlled their trading • England was controlling them from across the sea, which wasn’t fair because the colonies couldn’t be represented • The Proclamation of 1763 limited where the colonists could settle
The French & Indian War • In 1754, the English fought against the French and the Natives over land in the Ohio river valley. • The British won and gained control of Canada, and the French lands east of the Mississippi.
The French & Indian War, Cont. • Although the English won the war, they were in debt because the war was so expensive to fight. They would gain money back by taxing the colonies.
Mercantilism & Trade • The purpose of the English colonies was to make money! • Colonies could give England supplies, like lumber, raw materials, and tobacco. Also, the English would gain money because the colonies would buy manufactured goods from England.
Mercantilism & Trade • England gained more money and more power! • Another way to control trade and wealth was by passing the Navigation Acts, which said that the colonies could only trade with England.
Mercantilism & Trade - Question • Why do you think the colonists would have been angered by the passage of the Navigation Acts?
Controls & The Natives • There were many problems in and with the colonies that the British wanted to solve. • For example, tension with the American Indians seemed to be increasing. So, King George II passed the Proclamation of 1763 which banned the British from settling west of the Appalachians.
Control through TAXATION • England was in debt because of the French & Indian War, and they made money by taxing the colonies.
What were the taxes & acts? • Sugar Act (1764): Set taxes on molasses and sugar that was IMPORTED by colonists • Stamp Act (1765): Colonists had to pay for an official stamp each time they bought paper items.
Taxes and Acts, Cont. • Quartering Act (1765): Colonists were forced to house British soldiers in their homes. • No, this was not a tax, but it did show that the British were forcing & controlling the colonists to do things that were favorable to the British!
Acts & Taxes, Cont. • Townshend Acts (1767): Placed taxes on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea. • Tea Act (1773): Colonists were only allowed to buy tea from the British East India Company. Colonists feared this because it would put colonial merchants out of business.
Other methods of control… • The British would not let the colonists print their own money. • The colonial courts had no juries • If you were tried in a colonial count, you were found guilty until proven innocent.
