  2. The Schedule • Every Tuesday, a topic will be assigned. • The class will be divided into three groups. One group will represent the Affirmative. One group will represent the Negative. One group will represent the audience (questions and comments) • Every Friday, an informal debate will take place. • The style is called a TRIANGLE DEBATE.

  3. Discussion Etiquette • Participate Fully • Take turns speaking (one at a time) • Let others know that you have not finished speaking by using phrases such as • “I have one more thing to add . . .” • “Furthermore . . .” • “In addition . . .” • Wait for your turn – do not interrupt.

Discussion Etiquette • Use supportive gestures and body language: • Use respectful phrases when disagreeing with another speaker. • Maintain eye contact with the speaker. • Nod to show you are listening. • Listen carefully and attentively to other speakers. • Encourage and support those around you. • Avoid sarcasm and put-downs.

  5. Discussion Etiquette • Stay on topic. • Remain open to new ideas. • Use inclusive language. • Ask questions when you do not understand. • Do not monopolize the conversation.

  6. Speaking Out • Phrases for respectful disagreement include: • I disagree with . . . because . . . • I can’t agree with . . . • On the other hand . . . • I doubt that because . . . • Examples of inappropriate disagreement include: • You’re wrong! ■ That’s crazy/stupid! • No way! ■ What?!

  7. Speaking Out • Phrases for politely expressing an opinion: • In my opinion . . . • I believe . . . • Personally, I feel . . . • Not everyone will agree with me, but . . . • Phrases for politely making suggestions: • Why don’t you . . . • How about . . . • I suggest . . .

Debating Tips: Questions to ask yourself to prepare • Do I have proof to back up what I want to say? • Gather enough evidence. • Will my audience get what I’m trying to say? • Organize thoughts clearly and logically. • Do I sound confident? • Use strong, convincing language. • Will my main points stick with them? • Repeat, rephrase key ideas. • Do I sound monotonous? • Vary your voice. • Have I considered what the opposition will say? • Prepare for the arguments (rebuttal).

Triangle Debating Procedures • The class is divided into three groups on Tuesday. • Group 1 will argue in favor. • Group 2 will argue against. • Group 3 will comment on remarks made by a speaker and pose questions to groups 1 and 2. • Groups will get together to create a plan of attack, and decide on main arguments. • Students work individually to prepare arguments. • Practice, practice, practice, and be ready to go for Friday.
