Political Party Functions: • Recruit candidates – seeking men and woman who would meet voters approval • Educating the public – making people aware of important issues • Operating the government – work carried out on the basis of party affiliation • Patronage – rewarding loyal party members • Watchdog – party out of power watches the party in power and criticizes and offers solutions to its problems
Party Systems • One-Party System – • the party basically is the government • Conflicts only arise within the party • Oligarchy • Two-Party System • In these systems other minor parties exist • In the U.S. these 2 parties are the Republican and Democrat parties • Multi-Party System • Includes third parties
The Role of Minor Parties • A Third Party is any party other than one of the major two • There may be more than one Third Party • Three types of third parties: • Single-Issue Party – focus on 1 issue • Ideological Party – wants to change all of society • Splinter Party – group splits away from one of the major parties because of disagreement
Impact and Obstacles of Third Parties • Impact – How Do they Change the Election • When people vote for a third party candidate it takes votes away from the 2 major party candidates • This has effected the result in numerous elections. • Obstacles – Why Don’t they Win? • Must have great amount of support to be placed on ballot • Candidates must be elected to represent the voters • financing
Party Organization • Must declare voting preference when you register • In the U.S. you can register as Independent (no party preference)
Local and State Party Roles Local Party: • Precinct – voting district, based on home address • Precinct Captain – organizes party workers to distribute info in neighborhood/precinct State Party Organization: • State central committee – representatives from each precinct/neighborhood • In charge of finding/electing candidate for Governor and State Congress
National Party Role • National Convention – gathering of party members including local and state party officials • Meets every 4 years to choose presidential candidates • runs party’s national campaign/idea spreading
