GSC Collections Setting • The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) is part of the Earth Sciences Sector (ESS) of the Federal Department of Natural Resources of Canada (NRCan) • In 2006 the Earth Materials Collections (EMC) was established and it assumed the authority for collections life cycle management • When established the EMC was within the Data Management Division (DMD) of the Mapping Information Branch (MIB) • June 2012 MIB was tasked with integrating with the Canada Centre of Remote Sensing (CCRS) in order to create a national geospatial and earth observation organization. The new Branch is yet to be named but we (EMC) are now within the Collections Management and GeoInformation Division 2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett
Earth Materials Collections • The EMC assumed authority for collections life cycle management now and beyond the end of a particular project or program • The goal of the project is to provide professional management of collections and the associated documentation and to protect them from degradation, theft and destruction while permitting physical and intellectual access to the collections now and for the future • Staff working on the EMC collections belong to either MIB or the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) • In the 2011 June budget the Government of Canada (GOC) announced it would conducting a Government - wide review of expenditures • 2012 budget cuts and MIB staff were affected and the GSC funding for programs was reduced and marine field programs were affected 2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett
Earth Materials Collections • This project includes 6 facilities (16,000 m2 total) across Canada (Dartmouth, Quebec City, Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver, Sidney) • There are many collections (50+) of many different materials rocks, fossils, core (rock, ice, unconsolidated sediment), water and unconsolidated material • Each collection and facility are at different levels of sample and data management • The EMC group are now developing a plan to transform the less well managed collections within the Department 2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett

GSC Pacific (Sidney) • Occupies a campus with the Institute of Ocean Sciences (Department of Fisheries and Oceans) • Shares the facilities and services including the use of Canadian Coastguard research vessels and equipment • Samples are dispersed throughout the campus • In both refrigerated and ambient storage • In 2011 we began creating a digital catalogue of what there is and where it is. Also had to cull material to make space for new material. 2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett
GSC Atlantic • Co-located at BIO with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canadian Hydrographic Service, Environment Canada and Department of National Defence • Shares the facilities and services including the use of Canadian Coastguard research vessels and equipment • Majority of the Marine Geoscience Collection is archived at the GSC Atlantic Core Storage Facility 2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett
