Office Lesson 7 Desktop Publishing • Desktop publishing is creating printable copy using a computer • Various software packages cater to specific needs • Microsoft Word creates text-based documents • Microsoft Publisher creates graphics-based documents • Cross between Word and PowerPoint • Templates for standard printed items • Software and a printer do not equal desktop publishing • Commercial printing will be necessary for more than a few copies • Personal software can create the design, which saves money 3
Office Lesson 7 Document Layout • Document design should begin with the known • Printing began in China with carved wood blocks (6th century AD) • Modern printing began with Gutenberg around 1450 • Layout technique little changed over time • Planning is key to most human activity! As we used to say in • the Air Force, “Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance” • Composition and white space • The inked part of a printed page is about 25% • Composition arranges the other 75% to make the appearance • attractive • Design versus content 4
