  1. The ‘Green Skills – Conversations about work & home’ Gary Barbuto, Vince Blanco Peter Goode, Elizabeth Hellenpach

  2. AGENDA • Introduction to Green Collar Capability Project - 5mins by Elizabeth Hellenpach • Green Skills @ Work and Home – 15 mins by Peter Goode • Renewable Energy Strategies -10 mins by Gary Barbuto • Interview with Peter Goode – 5 mins by Gary Barbuto • Courses available • Useful websites

  3. WSI 2009 Strategic Directions Sustainability ‘Develop and deliver products and services for the growing sustainability market and model environmental, socio-economic and business sustainability principles’.

  4. green collar project • The purpose of the Green Collar Capability initiative was to establish TAFE NSW as the provider of choice for training in Green Skills and Environmental Sustainability with industry, government and community partners . • This project has delivered practical solutions for the environmental and business challenges of a diverse range of commercial, industrial and rural customers.

  5. Products • CIV in Renewable Energy (Clean Energy Council Accreditation) • Home Sustainability Assessment Scheme (Green Loans Accreditation) • Carbon Accounting (Intro & Advanced) • GHG Emissions & Energy Usage (Intro & Advanced) • Skill Sets In: • Sustainable Building Design/Building & Construction • Health Workers • Hospitality

  6. ISO 14001 • 20 WSI staff qualified as Environmental Management Systems Lead Auditors • Some will provide an auditing service to industry • Some will build this into their consultancy service with industry • 4 sections working toward ISO 14001 accreditation by March 2010. • Electrical Engineering, Environment (Blacktown), General Manufacturing and Refrigeration.

  7. Green Skills Sustainability requires radical new ways of thinking to achieve significant changes in production and consumption systems.

  8. Significant areas of interest for SUSTAINABILITY • Energy generation & use • Water use & reuse • Waste management Green Skills Keyword: MINIMISE

  9. Energy Generation

  10. Green Skills • Towards sustainability Energy use • Electricity – water heating, cooking, lighting, comfort, appliances, entertainment • Gas – cooking, comfort, appliances • Thermal performance - insulation So Where can we SAVE?

  11. Energyconsumption Greenhouse emissions (>8,000 kg/year)

  12. Hot water use Typical hot water use pattern in a water inefficient, 3 person household

  13. Then, choose a greenhouse efficient system Annual average greenhouse emissions of different systems Courtesy of Your Home

  15. LightingCost and greenhouse comparison * Includes transformer losses

  16. Green Skills • Towards sustainability • Water use, conservation & reuse • Personal consumption – washing, drinking, cooking, maintenance, ablutions • Outdoors – garden, washing, pool • Conservation – rainwater, grey water So Where can we SAVE?

  17. Water • Principle • Reduce water use and stormwater pollution • First: • Reduce water use indoor and outdoors • Then: • Reuse and recycle (rainwater, stormwater, wastewater) • Reduce stormwater pollution and runoff MINIMISE Source: Adapted from HIA GreenSmart Renovations

  18. Water useCapital city

  19. How do we use water? Coastal city Hot inland city

  20. Step 1… reduce water use These are the top 3 indoor water users: Indicative savings in annual water use for a three person household. Outdoor water can be significant!

  21. greywater & runoff can be harmful to people and the environment

  22. Green Skills What to do with WASTE

  23. Green Skills

  24. Green Skills • Towards sustainability • Waste management REDUCE • Reuse – packaging, adapt, renovate • Recycling – buy & think “GREEN” • Composting – plant & vegetable matter SOIL ! • Disposal - MINIMISE

  25. Renewable Energy Strategies by Gary Barbuto • WSIT Provides a number of Training Options for people wishing to work in the Renewable Energy Field

  26. Renewable Energy Training Options • Cert II in RE • Cert II in Sustainable Energy • Cert IV Electrical – PV Systems • Diploma of RE Engineering • Advanced Diploma of RE Engineering • Advanced Diploma of RE Technology • TAFE Plus in Grid Connected PV

  27. Cert II in RE • Target  Technicians who will need to assemble, setup and maintain basic RE systems.

  28. Cert II in Sustainable Energy • Target  People who wish to be involved in advising and promoting Sustainable Energy practices in the Community.

  29. Cert IV Electrical – PV Systems • Target  Electricians who will be designing, installing and Maintaining both Grid Connected and Stand Alone RE Systems. It also meets the requirements of the Clean Energy Council for Industry Accreditation as designers and installers of RE Systems.

  30. Diploma of RE Engineering • Target  People who will be involved with the development, commissioning and maintenance of large scale RE Systems.

  31. A. Diploma in RE Engineering • Target  People who will be involved with design, evaluation, sales and management of large RE Projects

  32. A. Diploma in RE Technology • Target  People who will be involved with design, evaluation and advice on large RE Projects. Requires more technical knowledge than the AD in RE Engineering.

  33. Tafe Plus – Grid Connected PV • Target  Electricians who wish to meet the Training Requirements for Industry Accreditation set be the Clean Energy Council. This course is run as a blended delivery model, requiring 4 days face to face attendance after private study and assignments have been completed.

  34. Interview • Gary to ask Peter about ABSA training and teaching Green Loans
