  1. Add Spatial Data to Existing Business Data to Create a GIS System Eric Abrams IT Division October 5th 2006

  2. Business Data • Business data is used to make day to day decisions • Everyone has business data • Excel File • Access Database • Oracle • SQL Server • Text File • Paper • Etc…

  3. Business Data • Where is you business data? • LAN Folder, Database • Is your business data maintained? • Regular update schedule • Data security • History • Can it be shared without duplication? • Example: Make a copy of an Excel file for someone to update then try to merge changes.

  4. Business Data • Does you data have a spatial location • Address • Lat/Long • Reference Post • Literal Description • Boundary

  5. Aviation • Need to locate Airports, Heliports and runways • Query aviation business data to display on map • Example: Show number of airports that have fuel XYZ over a certain capacity

  6. Aviation • Existing Aviation Oracle database • Over 130 tables and views • Oracle Forms used to maintain business data • Web site constructed to display business data from Oracle ww.iawings.com • Use Google maps for aerial photography on web site

  7. Aviation - Database

  8. Aviation – Business data

  9. Aviation – Heliport location

  10. Aviation – Spatial Locations • Created a tables in existing database to store spatial locations • AIRPORTS_SO • RUNWAY_SO • HELIPORTS_SO • SDO_GEOMETRY field

  11. Aviation - Data

  12. Aviation

  13. Aviation - Issues • Office GIS knowledge • Keeping spatial data up to date

  14. Five Year Program • Need to display planned projects and query business data to display on a map • Create maps quickly for commission meetings • On Demand requests from legislators • Maps easier to understand that tabular data

  15. Five Year Program • Phase I – Add spatial data to existing business data • Business data resided in IDMS • Created Oracle database to store snap shot from IDMS • Created spatial tables to store geometry • Program Management digitize projects, time consuming to keep business data and spatial data synchronized.

  16. Five Year Program

  17. Five Year Program

  18. 5 Year Program

  19. Five Year Program • Phase II – Use LRS to create project locations • Take Route, begin milepost, end mile post and transform locations into geometries using LRS • Projects follow LRS line work • No need to maintain project geometries, they are derived from LRS

  20. Five Year Program - Issues • Conversion process from Mainframe to Oracle • Notification of route issues

  21. Geographical Information Management System (GIMS) • GIMS database contains all road centerlines, structures and rails crossing locations and associated business data • Transportation Data had the need to update road centerlines via GeoMedia. • GeoMedia access to GIMS data came through MGE files generated each evening.

  22. Geographical Information Management System (GIMS) • GIMS had a spatial component UOR locations maintained from MicroStation Interface • Business Data maintained through MicroStation interface and Oracle Forms

  23. Geographical Information Management System (GIMS)

  24. Geographical Information Management System (GIMS) • Created a routine to transform UORs to SDO_GEOMETRY • Created database triggers to keep UORs and SDO_GEOMETRY synchronized • Added 3 spatial tables • ROAD_SO • RR_XING_SO • STRUC_SO

  25. Geographical Information Management System (GIMS) • Can modify geometry in GeoMedia and Microstation • Less time spent on geometry updates • Data update “real time” for Transportation Data customers. No more nightly batch process

  26. GIMS

  27. Facilities

  28. Facilities • Existing Data in IDMS • Moved to SQL server nightly • Spatial data stored in Oracle • Use GIS Software to link building information with spatial data • Build Web portal

  29. Projects that use LRS • LRS V1 went into production summer 2006 • Ability for systems to do routing and location with LRS geometries

  30. LRS and Snow runs • Ability to track snow runs for planning purposes • Garage supervisors create Excel spreadsheets • Spread sheets are loaded into an Oracle table and locations are derived from LRS

  31. LRS and Snow Runs

  32. LRS and Snow runs
