Who Was Involved Creating a healthy learning and working environment. • Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Earle Doman, was charged by the President to create a committee to address Missouri State University becoming “smoke free”. • The Campus Tobacco Use/Smoking Policy Advisory Committee was assembled to include faculty, staff and student representation, along with our general council.
Who Was Involved Creating a healthy learning and working environment. • Committee met the latter part of 2009 and into 2010 • In October 2009, the Student Government Association (SGA) posted a poll on the tobacco use policy issue and welcomed faculty, staff and students to participate. • The SGA also hosted discussion panels in 2009 in the PSU Theatre on the detriments of smoking and the new policy here at MSU. The entire campus community was encouraged to attend.
Who Was Involved Creating a healthy learning and working environment. • New Policy was developed in early 2010, and an interim policy became effective August 15, 2010. • In March 2010, the Tobacco Policy Education Campaign Committee (T-PECC) was formed to develop an education campaign that would increase awareness about the new Tobacco Policy that was developed in the first committee. • Committee involved several members from the original committee and several new members to include human resources, marketing and publications, and employee and student wellness representation
Creating a Tobacco-Free Campus Creating a healthy learning and working environment. • T-PECC partnered with the Center for Dispute Resolution to create an effective, non-confrontational approach to dealing with people who are not abiding by the policy. • Missouri State University went tobacco free on August 15, 2012.
Your Role as an Ambassador Creating a healthy learning and working environment. • It is expected that all students, faculty, staff and visitors to campus will comply with this policy. • You are empowered to respectfully inform others about the policy in an ongoing effort to enhance awareness and encourage compliance. • Campus resources to assist you

Understanding Reactions Creating a healthy learning and working environment. • People’s reactions are an expression of an underlying need • Need to feel respected • Need for autonomy • Need to be seen as reasonable, healthy, professional, intelligent • Need to feel heard • Recognizing these needs can help us manage our reactions to them

M – Make the assumption the person doesn’t know about the new policy O – Offer information on where they learn about the policy and get free resources to quit K – Kindlyremind them about the policy E – Encourage them to put out their cigarette R – Reinforce positive behavior by thanking the person for adhering to the policy
De-escalation Techniques Creating a healthy learning and working environment. • Be aware of your behavior and motivations • Be mindful of your role • Share info, don’t debate • Listen and acknowledge feelings • Ask questions to gain information • Anticipate others’ reactions • Consider people’s potential reactions and be deliberate about what your response would be • Focus on the behavior and not the person • E.g., people who smoke vs. smokers
