Thinspiration & Fitspirationvs.Inspiration & Motivation Oh, and what REAL success looks like
The trick Seems ok… Why it’s actually not • Inspiring • Good messages • Focusing on what you want • Positive (????) • Harmful underlying themes • Mixes good messages w/ unattainable (for most) ideals • Unrealistic standard of beauty disguised as health (majority is not healthy!) • Thin line between thinspo and pro-eating disorder (3)
proof • 2010 study showed that people w/ no history of eating disorders changed eating patterns (avg. -3,000 calories) the next week, after briefly browsing thinspo sights. (1) • 2006 study: thinspo worsens disorder issues (competition, self-denial, control). (1) • Before/after photos, <15 min (2) • Posture, tanning lotion, hair, bathing suit, zoom, filter
Be S.M.A.R.T • Specific • Measurable • Actionable • Realistic • Time-based • Use your common sense/better judgment • Prioritize • The goal should never be to hurt ourselves • Guilt/shame hurt
Strength vs. Weakness (4) Weakness Strength • Tackle the problem head-on • Often provokes discouragement and resistance • Back door approach • Fosters encouragement, readiness to change • Assists in outgrowing problems via engaging in new stronger life urges.
What changes do you see? Energy Attitude Outlook Productivity More engaged Appetite Clothes fit… Activities
