Definition of Adjective • An adjective is a word that modifies, or describes, a noun or pronoun • Adjectives usually come before the nouns they modify. • Ex: The big moon is lighting the dark sea. • “Big” comes before the word it modifies, “moon”; “dark” comes before the word it modifies, “sea” • Sometimes adjectives can be in the predicate and modify the subject. (PREDICATE ADJECTIVE!) • Ex: The shark was big and hungry. • The adjectives “big” and “hungry” are the predicate adjectives, and they modify the subject “shark.”
Adjectives as Participles • Adjectives can be present and past participles. (Remember those verbs we used helping verbs with? are watching – watching is a participle; had finished – finished is a partciple) • Sometimes these participles can be used as adjectives. • We watched the boring movie. • “Boring” is a present participle used as an adjective to describe “movie.” • That building is haunted. • “Haunted” is a past participle used as an adjective to describe “building.”
