  1. Adjectives They color our world

  2. Adjectives • An adjective describes a person, place, thing, or idea. • In other words, adjectives describe ______________ • An adjective provides information about the size, shape, color, texture, feeling, sound, smell, number, or condition of a noun or pronoun. • The excited, small puppy tried to jump on the tall bed. • The adjectives “excited” and “small” describe the noun “puppy” • The adjective “tall” describes the noun “bed”

  3. Definition of Adjective • An adjective is a word that modifies, or describes, a noun or pronoun • Adjectives usually come before the nouns they modify. • Ex: The big moon is lighting the dark sea. • “Big” comes before the word it modifies, “moon”; “dark” comes before the word it modifies, “sea” • Sometimes adjectives can be in the predicate and modify the subject. (PREDICATE ADJECTIVE!) • Ex: The shark was big and hungry. • The adjectives “big” and “hungry” are the predicate adjectives, and they modify the subject “shark.”

  4. Adjectives as Participles • Adjectives can be present and past participles. (Remember those verbs we used helping verbs with? are watching – watching is a participle; had finished – finished is a partciple) • Sometimes these participles can be used as adjectives. • We watched the boring movie. • “Boring” is a present participle used as an adjective to describe “movie.” • That building is haunted. • “Haunted” is a past participle used as an adjective to describe “building.”

  5. Let’s Try It My brother is a great artist. Her chicken casserole was eaten quickly. Julia’s Japanese friend taught her some words. My new neighbor plays his music too loud at night.

  6. A Few More Her music is relaxing and beautiful. The botanical garden was amazing! They are talented. My parents can be silly and embarrassing.
