Classifying Animals The Kingdom Animalia includes an amazing variety of creatures. Some swim Fly and many walk
Animals have many cells. They are multicellular like plants. • Unlike plants animals take in food from the environment. • Their bodies break down and digest food for energy and nutrients.
Radial Symmetry Animals with radial symmetry have body parts arranged equally around a middle point, such as a starfish.
Bilateral Symmetry Other animals , such as dogs, have bilateral symmetry. They have bodies with two similar halves.
Animal Kingdom • Multicellular (Many Cells) • Requires Oxygen • Eat Food • Most animals move from place to place • Reproduce sexually
Animal Species • The vast majority of animal species that are alive today are invertebrates---animals without backbones. • Vertebrates are animals with backbones. • Backbones are a series of bones joined together with a flexible material called cartilage.
Amphibians Amphibians are animals that can live both on land and in water. Frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts are amphibians (Salamanders and newts have tails). They usually need to live close to water, but do not spend their entire lives in water.
Amphibians need water to reproduce. If they lay their eggs on land their eggs would dry out.
Reptiles Reptiles are animals that have cold blood, that lays eggs, and that has a body covered with scales or hard parts.
Reptiles are cold-blooded, and most of them keep their internal body temperature steady.
Reptiles • They live near water, spend their time in it, but they reproduce on land. Reptile eggs have a tough outer covering that keeps them from drying out.
Reptiles are cold-blooded, and most of them keep their internal body temperature steady.
Warm Blooded Vertebrates • Birds and mammals are warm blooded. • They maintain a constant internal body temperature. • Birds are the only group of animals that have feathers.
Mammals • Mammals have the most complex organs and nervous systems in the animal kingdom. • The brain is very large. • They have hair. • They feed milk to their young. • Most give birth to live young. • Mammals move to find food and to escape from a predator.
Animal Classification • The animal classification system classifies animal by species. • Animals in the same family share some of the same characteristics. • The Classification system classifies animals by; kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species.
