Background • Introduction of multi-university concept in early 1990s. • Six different universities (TU, KU, MSU, PU, PoU & LU) so far have come into existence. • Efforts are being made to develop coordinated links among national and with international institutions and programs. • Attempts are being made to develop sectoral excellence among Nepalese universities to maximize resources. • The links and understanding reached with foreign institutions could not be fully explored. • Lack of links, resource and expertise in new universities to expedite academic & research activities.

Status of Academic Programsin PU • Programs in operation • Bachelors Degree Programs: Pharmacy, Nursing, Bio-Technology, Bio-Medical Engg. Business Administration, Computer Application, Computer Engg., Electronics and Communication Engg., Civil Engg., and MBBS and Allied Sciences. • Master’s Degree Programs: Meat Technology, Dairy Technology, Life-Science, Geomatic, & Land Resource Engg., Earthquake Engg., Computer application, Business Administration, Population & Rural Development, Social Work, Development Studies and Nursing. • Natural Resource & Environmental Science (Under consideration)
Center of Attention • Agro-economic Potential • Rich Bio-diversity, high quality fruits, vegetables & cereals, herbal & medicinal plants, tea, coffee & cash crops, milk and meat products etc. • Environmental protection. • Value Addition Potential • In country processing, Scientific organic farming, & commercialization of natural products. • Industrial research and quality control • Improved management & business system. • Enhancements of expertise • Civil, information & natural resource development, production technology and health care.

Challenges • Poverty Reduction Scientific & Technical inputs. • Coordinated mobilization of 85% of national population engaged in agriculture • Enhancement of traditional technology • Needful modern technology transfer • Low, medium & high level human resource development • Strengthening institutional capacity & expertise • Institutional participation & coordination of academic programs with national development processes • Promotion of research & development • Integration and consolidation of Nepalese strength and expertise for nation building.
Need of University • Higher level research & information facilities, • Basic physical facilities including laboratory equipments for effective teaching learning processes. • Development of faculty expertise & useful complementation from foreign institutions • Regular economic resources • Initiation, mediation, communication, needful coordination & investment from NRN side. • PU is inclusive to NRN and foreign experts and is ready to provide necessary institutional affiliation such as visiting professor/scientist, research student, faculty positions etc. as well as every possible environment who wish to contribute in teaching learning and researches.
Conclusions • Academic programs of higher learning need to be closely linked with the national need & target based. • Contribution and participation of academic institutions in the national development processes need to strengthened. • Cooperation and collaboration between the industrial establishment and academic institution is necessary. • Investment for infrastructural development & research in academic institution need to be increased. • Technical and Business skills of grass root level population need to be developed. • Productive collaboration and cooperation with foreign institutions need to be realized in order to overcome the limitations of Nepalese universities. • NRN can have significant role and contribution in national development endeavors.
