Effective Time Management “What exactly are you doing?”
Creating a To Do Checklist • Don’t be vague when making your list! • Ex. I am going to study today. • Study what? • For how long? • Do not schedule time. • Except when necessary, for example: class and work.
A “schedule” is too easy to throw off! • Example: • I want to run 40 minutes everyday. • I set 6:00 AM as my running time. • I start a new job that starts at 6:15 AM. • Schedule is thrown off. • Better to put on a checklist: Run 40 minutes everyday.
Creating a To Do Checklist • Make a list that needs to be completed, a real “checklist.” • Bite Size Pieces – items on To Do Checklist. • It is easy to procrastinate big & vague tasks. • It is easier to GET STARTED on small, manageable, specific task.
Creating a To Do Checklist • Most Task should be no more than 30 minutes • This will help you avoid PUTTING THEM OFF! • Task should have specific “starting” and “ending” points so that you can evaluate if you’ve successfully completed the task.
Creating a To Do Checklist • Taking Breaks • Plan 10 minute activities for every hour of studying. • Breaks are important, but if they’re not planned for, they are often never-ending! • Telling Yourself that You can Reach Your Goals • Use rewards and anticipate UFOs (UnForeseen Obstacles).
