How Much Do We Tile? • Draw and solve…. • In Bathroom A, a 6 foot by 8 foot room, you want to cover 3/4 of the room with tile. How many square feet in Room A will be tiled? Bathroom B is also a 6 foot by 8 foot room, but you want to cover 7/8 of the room with tile. How many square feet in Bathroom B will be tiled? • Just looking at the equations that you wrote, write an explanation about how you can tell which bathroom will have more tile?
Room A: 6/8 * (6*8) • Room B: 7/8 * (6*8)
How Much Do We Tile? • What do pictures or representations look like? • How do equations match your representations? • What concepts/skills are we working with? • What Standards are at play? • What are we “addressing” with the last part?
How Many Tiles will we need? • Draw and solve… • In a 7.5 foot by 10.5 foot room, you want to tile the entire room with tiles that are 3 feet long on each side. How many tiles will you need? • In a 7.5 foot by 10.5 foot room, you want to tile the entire room with tiles that are 3 feet long on a side and 1 and ½ feet on the other side. How many tiles will you need? • Write and examine equations for the 3 tasks above. How do the equations and the answers relate to one another?

How Much Time? How Much Money? • You have 2 options for tiling material: • Gray: $17.98 per square foot OR • Chocolate: $18.76 per square foot. • You hire a handyman to do the work. It takes 20 minutes to prepare the material and an average of 7 minutes per tile. How much time will it take to finish each of the rooms above? If you pay him a rate of $75 per hour how much will it cost for materials and labor?
Progression • How did each part of these tasks relate or connect? • Could your students start with the first part or would they need to do a “scaffolding task” to build up? • What would that look like? • How do these relate or connect to EoG preparation?
