  1. JAXA Archive Activity September 2005 Ukraine Kyiv JAXA/EORC Kengo Aizawa JAXA/EORC Osamu Ochiai

  2. Background • JAXA started to design a new Archive/Information system for GOSAT and following satellites. • JAXA havetwo of archive/information system. They are not match new request.

  3. Objective New archive system aims • Upgrade system performance (Quick data access for quick distribution) • Effective Disk Utilization • Reduce maintenance, operation cost • Vender independent (limited for SAN DISK part)

  4. to be a vender independent.. We studied SMI-S specification and confirmed it just applied to SAN environment not to tape machine. SMI-S is an interface standard that enables interoperability both hardware and software between storage products from different vendors that an enterprise would use in a SAN environment.

  5. Concept • To satisfy the objectives we adopt Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) for Storage system

  6. What’s ILM ? • ILM is a Management that matches data to the change in the importance degree from generation to the deletion and stores it in appropriate storage. • Data is classified according to informational worth. • Required availability and performance are efficiently secured for every data by storage arranged hierarchically

  7. Information Lifecycle in general Time Worth 4thstage No access Semi permanent preservation 3rdstage Low freq access 1ststage High freq access 2ndstage Middle freq access

  8. to apply archive system.. 1ststage High freq access High speed High reliable expensive DISK 3rdstage Low freq access low speed High reliable Low-cost Media 2ndstage Middle freq access middle speed middle reliable Low-cost DISK 4thstage Semi permanent preservation Generated Products

  9. to apply archive system.. • classify EO data into some groups by its characters • detention period on each stage will be decided by the group Group A Group B Group C 2nd stage 1st stage 3rdstage

  10. archive system looks as.. archive system looks as a huge virtual storage HSM software archive system

  11. System comparison Array Disk Robotics tape EOIS 4TB (DAS) 400TB system hold 3days hold forever ALOS 4TB (DAS) 200TB System hold 1dayhold forever New 100TB(SAN) 700TB System depend on data hold forever

  12. Plan • Basic design for new archive/Information system will be done by end of March 2006. • New system will apply to GOSAT, Research use.
