  2. Mythology • The ancient Greeks developed a vast mythology to answer questions about their origins and to explain the nature of their world.

  3. Gods and Goddesses • Greek deities fought, fell in love, experienced jealously, and played tricks on one another and on mortals. • They were anthropomorphic- had human characteristics. • They controlled everything from the movement of the stars and planets to the success or failure of a harvest.

  4. The Olympians (page 162-163) • Zeus • Hera • Poseidon • Demeter • Hestia • Athena • Apollo • Arthemis • Hermes • Aphrodite • Hephaestos • Ares

  5. Other gods/goddesses • Hades- the brother of Zeus, and god of the underworld • Dionysus- god of wine and drama

  6. Muses, the Fates, and the Furies • Muses- inspired artists, writers and musicians • The Fates- three female deities, controlled the destinies of human beings. • The Furies- enforced family law and avenged those who were killed by family members.

  7. Religious Practice • The Greeks had shrines, alters, or temples, but mostly worshiped on their own. • They believed in powerful oracles. • They also believed in omens, curses and superstitions. • Festivals were held to honor the gods
