Calvinism - Arminianism Week 4
Background • Taught by: Presbyterian, Lutheran, Reformed, Episcopal, Baptist(?) churches. • Called Calvinism because Calvin developed it most coherently & recently. Augustine 1st developed it fully. • Both Augustine & Calvin were reacting to "Salvation by works" doctrines common to their days. • Luther, Cavin, Zwingli, Melanchthon, Knox, other reformers taught it • Melanchthon later denied it, so that Lutherans generally oppose it. • A part of the "Westminster confession of faith" ABSOLUTE PLAN: Everything predestined, down to the minutest details Scriptures: See Statement #1, later in handout “God does whatever He wants to do, contingent only upon Himself.” Issue=God's Sovereignty Basis for Calvinistic Thought
> Were YOU seeking after God? \ Didn't You need Irresistable grace? T.U.L.I.P. Double predestination: foreordination of heaven & hell destinies Infralapsarian - Supralapsariandebate: wether God created man in order to give him a destiny of heaven or hell (Supralapsarian) or gave man a destiny as a result of the fall (Infralapsarian) Calvin called this the "Horrible Decree" (Dictum Horibulum) • Total Depravity: Rom.3:10,11; Col.1:29 Everything within man totally corrupted, even his ability to choose (will). • Unconditional Election: not dependant on man at all Prov. 16:4; Acts 13:48; Eph.1:3,4; 1Pet.2:8 Reasons for Election are known only to God, not dependent on man AT ALL (because of Total Depravity). • Limited Atonement: only believer's sins are paid for. • Irresistible Grace: no decisiveness involved. Jn.6:37,44,65; Rom.9:16. Grace means nothing deserved on man's part. • Perserverence of the Saints: i.e., eternal security. Dallas Rejects (4 point calvinist) All a man can do is sit back and "Receive it". Any Decision = "Work" and thus deny Grace. a] Calvin & Augustine's reaction to "works" theologies of their day. b] Support:; See #3 From handout: God overrules human will.
