WHAT MAKES A SENTENCE • NEEDS THREE THINGS… • 1 The words make sense and express a complete thought. • 2 It begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop, exclamation mark or question mark. • 3 It contains a predicate, and a subject. The predicate, or verb tells what the subject, or noun, is doing.
WHAT IS A SIMPLE SENTENCE? • WHAT IS A SIMPLE SENTENCE? • The most basic type of sentence is the simple sentence, which contains only one clause. A simple sentence can be as short as one word.
EXAMPLES OF SIMPLE SENTENCES • Melt! • Ice melts. • The ice melts quickly. • The ice on the river melts quickly under the warm March sun. • Lying exposed without its blanket of snow, the ice on the river melts quickly under the warm March sun.
COMPOUND SENTENCES • A compound sentence is when you join two sentences together using a conjunction. • The most common conjunctions are; and, although, because, but, if, or, thought, where, whether. • Conjunctions that indicate time are; before, until, since, when, whenever, while.
EXAMPLES OF COMPOUND • Examples: • Amanda wore the red dress and it was dirty . • Amanda wore the red dress because it was dirty. • Amanda wore the red dress before it was dirty
COMPLEX SENTENCES • Complex sentences are made up of one main idea that is supported by • one or more related ideas. The main ideas does not need to come first. • Complex sentences need punctuation, usually commas.
WHERE DOES THE PUNCTUATION GO? • It was a beautiful summer’s day as Alan, with his prize held high, paced towards the pier. • It was a beautiful summer’s day (probably the hottest that year) as Alan paced towards the pier. • It was a beautiful summer’s day as Alan paced -with a bounce in his step- towards the pier.
