The First People pg. 190 • First communities in North America • Formed by Native Americans or American Indians • Live in groups called tribes • Tribes shared the same land and ways of life • Native American Groups • Own culture and language • Language- is a set of words used to communicate • Early Native Americans did not use written languages • Learned about past from stories told by older family members • Oral History – Oral means “spoken”
Native Americans pg. 191 • Native Americans once lived all over United States • Each group had different natural resources because of the area in which they lived. • Used natural resources to meet needs for • Food, clothing, and shelter
Types of Shelter pg. 191 • Shelter- a home or other building that protects people from the weather. • Example – • Villages near forests used wood for shelter • Villages near rivers use water for travel and trade • Villages in dry areas less trees built shelters with grasses or mud bricks dried in sun.
Two Different Ways of Life pg. 192 • Hunting Communities – hunted and fished • Gathered plants, nuts, and wild berries • GREAT PLAINS- • Hunted buffalo and bison – used all parts of animal • Meat for food, Bones for tools • Skin to make clothes and shelters • Tribes moved to follow buffalo • Shelter – tepee- made from animal skin pulled over wooden poles
