Promotion and Tenure ConferenceEric B. Kmiec, Ph.D., University P&T CommitteeMarch 14, 2007 • Role of University Promotion and Tenure Committee • Mechanism of Review • Key Features of the Portfolio • Organization • Completeness • Supporting documents • Candidate’s statement
What Makes a Good File? • Department guidelines for promotion • Clear, precise and summarized • Hire letter/appointment letter • What percentage of research/teaching? • Chairman’s letter explaining negative votes • Why split votes? • Reputable outside references • Avoid friends! • Honest letters can be dicey. It’s OK • Avoid overexplaining bad reference letters • Honest representation of funding • Group grants count but…..! • Be precise with rebuttal letters • Don’t whine!
What Makes a Bad File? • Files the size of Mt. Everest • Badly organized files • Letters that do not support hiring criteria • Did they meet expectations? • Moving target as years go on • Unclear departmental rules • Misrepresenting funding/scholarly activities
