WHAT IS AN ANTICYCLONE ? • An area of high pressure with circulation of winds around a central region of high atmospheric pressure
FUN FACTS • Winds go in a clockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere • Winds go in an anticlockwise direction in the Southern Hemisphere • Anticyclones appear on weather charts as a series of concentric, widely spaced isobars of 1000 mbs and above. The roughly circular closed isobar at its central region indicates the area of highest pressure.
HOW ARE ANTICYCLONES FORMED? • When weather is cold in the atmosphere, it falls towards the earth’s surface. • the weight of air increases, pressing on the earth’s surface. • which means the air pressure is high
WEATHER CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH ANTICYCLONES IN THE WINTER • clear skies • very low temperatures • calm, or light winds • no precipitation • frosty conditions
WEATHER CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH ANTICYCLONES IN THE SUMMER • clear skies • high temperatures • calm, or light winds • no precipitation
