S-5: Public Affairs • Attend JROTC related events and take photographs of Unit in action • Produce memoir such as photo scrapbooks, slideshows, etc. • Maintain portion of school website with relation to JROTC • Produce recruiting methods such as brochures or newsletters • Promote program through community (service-learning projects, community service, etc.)

  34. Golden Eagle Battalion Activities and Accomplishments

  35. Service Learning • Cadets participated in two service learning projects this school year: • Operation Middle School • Cadets spent a morning with 8th grade students demonstrating the true meaning of being a leader and what JROTC is really about. • Peanut Butter Jelly Time • Cadets are partnering with Limestone County Churches Involved to raise a significant amount of plastic jars of peanut butter and jelly to aid the county’s needy. This project is receiving help from both the school and the community. It also is an ongoing project being held until April 30.

  36. Community Service • Cadets raised over $500 within the battalion to support several families during the holidays. • Cadets participated in an American Red Cross Blood Drive. • Cadets will be participating in what is called “Flags on Graves” on May 31. This is a memorial service for fallen veterans in Limestone County where cadets, cub scouts, and other citizens place US Flags on the memorial sites of former veterans.

Community Affairs • Limestone County VFW Veteran’s Day Program: • Presentation of the Colors • 21 Gun Salute to fallen soldiers • Athens Veteran’s Museum 9/11 Ceremony: • Hoisted the United States Flag at Half-Staff • The United States Flag is raised every morning at 0740 in front of Athens High School and is taken down at 1500.

Competitions • Cadets participated in multiple air rifle competitions in the sporter division: • Montgomery Bell Academy • NARL Regional Match (The Junior Varsity Team placed 3rdin the NARL) • Cadets participated in two drill competitions with squad and platoon teams along with a color guard team: • Alabama A & M University Drill Meet • Sparkman High School JROTC Drill Meet • Cadets participated in two physical training competitions: • Alabama A & M University PT Competition • Sparkman High School JROTC PT Competition

Fundraisers • Cadets planned and hosted one fundraiser: • Pizza Hut Spaghetti Dinner • Cadets also earned money for the program by teaming up with the Athens High School Beta Club by helping support the basketball teams in running the concession stand, setting up and breaking down the gym, and by assisting the coaches.

  40. Military Formal Ball • Cadets planned and hosted the Unit’s 45th Annual Military Formal Ball. • The ball had over 100 attendees and was deemed one of the most extravagant events at Athens High School. • The ball was held February 13, 2010 at the Redstone Arsenal Officers and Civilians Club.

Color Guard • The unit’s color guard has had over thirty performances for a variety of occasions such as school sporting events, community events, and formal events. • The Color Guard is one of the most signature trademarks of Athens High School. • Major Upcoming Performances: • Boys and Girls Club • VFW Programs • State of Alabama SCA Conference • Relay for Life

  42. Parades • Cadets participated in three parades: • Athens High School Homecoming Parade • City of Athens Annual Veteran’s Day Parade • City of Athens Annual Christmas Parade
