What it was intended to be in the first place….. “a global partnership for the delivery of environmental data and information. “ • Simply put, it is a “discovery tool” that is built upon partnerships with authoritative and reliable institutions • It provides access to resources managed by these partners (e.g. UN clearing houses, government and non-government organisations, etc) from a single entry point • Google cannot do this….it caters for too broad a user base, is not vetted, crawls and indexes just about anything on the internet and is unstructured (e.g. water=keringet, water pipes, water management)

Mandate – to provide access to information and data concerning the environment • Although Information is growing exponentially, there is no single “coordinated” mechanism that provides access high quality environmental data and information • As a result : Information and data is not effectively recycled Information and data is not effectively utilized resources are wasted duplication is common within our own programme we do not know what we have or what is available
