  3. POLISH EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION Compulsory education in Poland starts at the age of five or six for the 0 class of kindergarten (Polish: przedszkole, literally: pre-school) and six to seven years in the 1st grade of primary school (Polish: szkoła podstawowa). The law requires that children complete one year of formal education before entering 1st grade and do so by the age 6 or 7. At the end of 6th grade when the students are 13, they takea compulsory exam that determines to which lower secondary school (gimnazjum, pronounced gheem-nah-sium) (Middle School/Junior High) they will be accepted. They attend this school for three years for grades, I,II, III. Then, they take another compulsory exam to determine the upper secondary level school they will attend. There are several alternatives from then on, the most common are the three years in a High School, four years in Technical College or three years in Vocational School. The first two, end with a maturity examination (matura), and may be followed by several forms of upper education, leading to Bachelor: licencjat or inżynier, Master: magister and eventually PhD: doktor. The system of education in Poland allows for 22 years of continuous, uninterrupted schooling.

  4. Primary School – classes 1-3 In Poland during the first, second and third grade of Primary School children study Polish, English, PE and Religious Education. They can also do more in extra curricular activities such as: swimmming, gimnastics, dancing and drama. Most of the subjects in 1st, 2nd, 3rd grade are taught by form teachers (one teacher for 3 years). After school children go to the common room or to our library. They can do their homework there or play with the others. There is also a reading room where they can surf the internet, read books or simply help others with their projects. During breaks children can laze in the corridors where they play, talk or listen to music. What's really sweet is that the youngest children from our school can have breakfast in the school canteen 5 minutesearlier before the break, so that they don't have to hurry. In our school there are 6 teachers teaching the youngest classes. They are all very nice and veeeery patient 
