Anorexia Nervosa is…. • One type of eating disorder in which a person starves him or herself and weighs 15% (or more) below a healthy (age & height appropriate) weight. • The person may also exercise to extremes to lose weight.
#1 Reason Why? • Studies suggest that a genetic (inherited) component may play a more significant role in determining a person's susceptibility to anorexia than was previously thought. • Researchers are currently attempting to identify the particular gene or genes that might affect a person's tendency to develop this disorder, and preliminary studies suggest that a gene located at chromosome 1p seems to be involved in determining a person's chance of developing anorexia.
Health Risks • Dehydration & Constipation • Abdominal Pain & Nausea • Hormonal Changes • Damage to Body Organs • Decrease in Heart Rate & Blood Pressure • Hair loss • Malnutrition • Depression • Lack of Self Respect • *No Menstruation Cycle for Females*
Anorexia by Numbers…. • Teen anorexia is most common among teen girls (often ages 14-18) • About 10 percent of teens with anorexia are boys, the other 90 percent are girls • Between 5 and 20 percent of teens with anorexia will die because of the disorder • Anorexia is the third most common chronic illness among adolescents. • 40 – 60% of high school girls diet. • 50% of girls between the ages of 13 and 15 believe they are overweight. • 80% of 13 year old girls have dieted. • 40% of 9 year old girls dieted
