Current State of Federal Funding • States are refusing to fund any health care institutions that perform abortions: • Indiana- passed a bill to stop funding of any health care providers that perform abortion • North Carolina- prohibited the state from entering to contracts or providing federal funding to Planned Parenthood • Wisconsin- removed $1 million in federal family-planning funds • New Hampshire- blocked a $1.8 million contract with Planned Parenthood • New Jersey- Gov. Chris Christie removed $7.5 million in funding for Planned Parenthood • Texas- passed a bill that would sent $47 million in taxpayer money to other organizations

Opposing Viewpoints:Pro-Federal FundingAnti-Federal Funding • Services are provided to men and women who might not otherwise have access to or be able to afford other reproductive health institutions: • Access to birth control • Emergency contraception • Pregnancy options counseling • Sexuality education • Vasectomies and tubal ligations • Screening for breast, cervical and testicular cancers • Estimates that 1 in 5 women have received health care from one of the clinics • Believe that funding Planned Parenthood gives teens the wrong idea • Leads to more pregnancies • Believe that U.S. federal taxes shouldn’t be used to fund Planned Parenthood • Especially because of our bad economy now • Approximately $400 million

Obama/Democratic Position on Federal Funding for Planned Parenthood • Will protect federal funding for Planned Parenthood • Willing to stop providing health care to needy men, women and children • Threatened to cut all Medicaid funding to states that defund Planned Parenthood • Live Action released undercover video in February of a Virginia Planned Parenthood abortion center agreeing to help a man get abortions for under-age girls

Republican Party Position • Want to cut off $293 million the clinics receive through Medicare • February 18, 2011-House Republicans approved an amendment that denies Planned Parenthood from receiving any federal funding under Title X • Republicans call for an end to Planned Parenthood’s federal funding • Want to block $70 million Planned Parenthood receives each year under Title X

Anthony List’s 2012 Pro-Life Presidential Leadership Pledge • Didn’t sign it because he was afraid it would limit his options in office • Used to support abortion rights in his 1994 Senate • Last candidate to come out in support of Planned Parenthood defunding

Anthony List’s 2012 Pro-Life Presidential Leadership Pledge • Nominate to the U.S. federal bench judges who are committed to applying the original meaning of the Constitution • To select only pro-life appointees for relevant Cabinet and Executive Branch positions • To advance pro-life legislation to permanently end all taxpayer funding of abortion in all spending programs and defund Planned Parenthood • Advance and sign into law a Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act to protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain from abortion

Rick Perry on Federal Funding for Planned Parenthood • Against federal funding for Planned Parenthood • Recently signed a bill that could cut off as much as $30-40 million in taxpayer funding Planned Parenthood in Texas • Called Senate Bill 7 • Defunds $34 million from Planned Parenthood • Prevents local tax funding for elective abortions by hospital districts • Allows the state to regulate adult stem cell banks
