Early Greek Civilization • Minoans on the Island of Crete • King Minos and the labyrinth • Mycenae (mainland Greece) • TROY
The Rise of Greek City-States • The geography caused isolated city states (polis), each with their own government and laws • Shared a common culture based on language, religious beliefs, traditions, and economy
Military Sparta • Located in Southern Greece called Peloponnesus (Peloponnesian Peninsula). • Conquered their neighbors in 725 BC and forced them (helots) to farm for them and used force to control them. • Strict obedience and self discipline were highly valued.
Democratic Athens • Known for its system of government. • Every citizen could vote. • Main governing body was the Citizens Assembly—open to all but only the first 5000 citizens could attend • Met regularly, about 10 times a year • Directed foreign policy and made laws
Democratic Athens • First to introduce this type of government—democracy—ordinary citizens participate in government, either directly or by elected representatives • Citizens were men only. • Women, foreigners, and slaves were not citizens and could not participate in government.
