3. Before your application can be processed, you need to: • provide all the required information and certified documentation; and • pay the application + annual registration fee. How do I apply for registration? How much does it cost to register? Application fee of $46.00 + an annual registration fee = • A customer reference number will be provided to you as part of the online application. • We have a range of payment options: • By credit card online or by phone • at any Service Tasmania shop; or • by BPay

4. How long does the registration process take? Allow up to 4 weeks for the registration process. Don’t leave it until you have a job offer. This could delay your start date with your new employer. November is the best time to submit an application for registration in 2012.

5. What documentary evidence do I need to provide? All documents need to be either originals or certified. Photocopies or facsimiles of certified copies are not accepted. Proof of identity –we will already have on file • A certified copy of a full birth certificate (birth extracts will not be accepted), • A certified copy of a current or expired passport, or • An Australian naturalisation or citizenship document. Note: If you have been known by other names you need to provide documentary evidence of ALL known names: • A certified copy of a marriage certificate, • A certified copy deed poll, • A certified copy of a divorce certificate/order (decree absolute), or • Other certified name change documentation. Proof of qualification(s) For completed tertiary qualifications: • Certified copies of the full academic transcripts indicating that the degree/ award was conferred / awarded.

6. A certified copy is a photocopy of an original document which has been certified by a: • Justice of the Peace, • Commissioner for Declarations or, • Notary Public, if overseas What should certified copies look like? 7. Where will I find a Commissioner for Declarations? In Tasmania, Commissioners for Declarations include: • Full-time teachers at a school or tertiary institution • Public sector permanent employees with 5 years continuous service  • Bank officers with 5 years continuous service • Police officers • Members of Parliament, or local government councillors • Ministers of religion under the Marriage Act 1961 A number of TRB staff are also Commissioners for Declarations. If you live in the south of the state, you can bring your original documents into our office and we can certify them for you.

8. The Board needs to determine whether an applicant is of good character to work with students and in a school environment. This check of good character involves checking your: • Character reference • Previous employment • Record of Conviction Check Criteria for Registration Good Character Check

9. Criteria for Registration Record of Conviction The Teachers Registration Act 2000 requires the Board to take into account any conviction or charge made against an applicant. This is done through a national Record of Conviction check. The TRB requests/initiates the Record of Conviction (RoC) check once we have received your payment and proof of identity documents. The RoC can take up to four weeks to be returned to TRB to make this determination of character. Information received through this process is stored in secure personal files at the Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania.

10. The Teachers Registration Act 2000 requires an applicant for registration to be fit to be a teacher. In determining whether a person is fit to teach the Board may take into account: • any medical, psychiatric or psychological condition; • the competence of the person as a teacher; and • any other matter it considers relevant. 11. Your registration will expire on 31 December of the relevant year, dependant on how many years you have paid for. You will receive an email notification of approval by email. This notification email will include your expiry date, category and TRB number. These details about your teacher registration will also be added to our public register of teachers When does my registration expire?
