Empa Materials Science and Technology History, WorthKnowing, Facts andFigures
HistoryofEmpa • 1880 The «Institution for the Testing of Building Materials», the • forerunner to Empa, begins its work. • 1891 Ludwig Tetmajer, the first director of Empa, is given the task of • investigating the collapse of a railway bridge near • Muenchenstein, built by the world-famous engineer Gustav • Eiffel. Tetmajer is quickly able to demonstrate the cause of the • collapse. As a consequence, the institute attracts international • acclaim. • 1937The Swiss Testing Institution in St.Gallen merges with Empa. • 1962 Empa moves from Zurich to Dubendorf. • 1988 A significant change of course occurs, with increased emphasis • placed on research. The Empa is renamed «Federal Material • Testing and Research Institute». Ludwig Tetmajer, First Empa Director
HistoryofEmpa • 1994The staff of the Armaments Services Group joins Empa and • establishes the Materials Technology Laboratory. • 1996 The staff at Empa’s St.Gallen site move into their new building. • From 2001 Empa‘s priorities shift primarily towards research and • innovative development as well as providing specialized • services. • 2010 Empa increasingly aligns its activities more closely with its core • mission: To transfer research and technologies into marketable innovations

Accident Insurance • SUVA – Insurance againstOccupationaland Non-occupationalAccidents (UVG) • Foroccupationaland non-occupationalriskofaccident, youareinsuredwith Suva. In thecaseof a hospitalstay, thecostsforthestay in a general ward arecovered. • AXA Winterthur – Supplement toAccident Insurance UVG (voluntary) • The costsof a hospitalstay in a private ward canadditionallybeinsuredwith AXA. Empaoffersitsemployeescollectivesupplementaryinsuranceforthispurpose.
