Bellringer • On the back of your Dynasty chart, create a chart that shaped like a large T. • At the top, put the word “positive” and “negative”. • Read pg 225 “China’s Geography”.
What do we want to know? • Compare the civilization of China with other groups we have studied • `where it is located • Major locations • The 4 dynasties of Ancient China • Their government

Where are we going? • China is in East Asia • Today, it is the most populated country in the world… over a billion people live there. • Its capital is called Beijing • It is a communist government… one social class of people
Map • China’s geography is very diverse • Desert to the North called the Gobi • Mountains to the west.. The Himalayas and Altay • Seas to the East and South… East China, Yellow and South China • Most early people lived near the Huang He or Yellow River
Bellringer • Name 3 important ways China was isolated from the rest of the world in ancient times.
Boundaries • Because of so many geographical boundaries, do you think china had contact with other groups? • No, because they were geographically isolated. This means their geography kept them from communicating with others.
Government • China has always been ruled by dynasties • The first dynasty was called the Shang • The kings of the Shang had a four class system of grouping • They had warlords or military rulers to rule different districts. • Most people were traders and farmers
The Zhou (Joe) • The Zhou created a bureaucracy or divided government into different departments • Kings were considered linked between heaven and earth • Divided kingdom into territories
The Qin ( Chin) • A dynasty that had only one ruler: Qin Huangdi • He was a cruel ruler that forced people to work for him. • Built the Great Wall of China • Hated by his people b/c of his treatment
The Han • Created a way of getting government jobs by giving a test of knowledge (civil service exams) • Expanded the land into a empire • Han rule was a time of growth and invention
Bellringer • Identify one way the Shang Dynasty was different from the Zhou Dynasty in terms of the way each ruled. • This should be written as a short paragraph. • It should have a main idea and details that support it. • It will be taken up as a daily grade. • You can use your organizer for reference.
Dynastic Cycle • What is it? • It is the way the Chinese determined the right dynasty to rule • Ruling dynasties claim the Mandate of Heaven or the divine right to rule according to the Gods • Called the dynastic cycle b/c dynasty go through cycles of good rule going bad
Bellringer • On the flow chart labled “Dynastic Cycle”, explain what exactly is it. • Give a small definition somewhere on the chart • You don’t need to write a paragraph, but a short definition that sums it up.

What is a “philosophy”? • A philosophy is a belief system. • It can be about anything. Sports, Life, your career can have philosophies • The Chinese valued religion, but their philosophies about life, government, and relationships created a unique culture.
Legalism • Developed by Hanfeizi • Society needs strict laws and punishment • Beat people into doing right • Beat ‘em again… and again… and again • Uses force and power to teach man how to act
Confucianism • Based on the teaching of Confucius • Emphasizes the 5 relationships and respect for parents • Believes all men with talent should take part in government • “measure the feelings of others by one’s own • Filial Piety- respect for parents

Daoism • Based on the teachings of Laozi and written in the De Jing (The Way of the Dao) • Emphasizes how people should behave • Give up worldly desires (does this sound familiar?) • Seek peace and harmony with nature • Less involvement with worldly issues
