230 sq. m public green area per citizen in Göteborg provides many opportunities but also many challenges. The opportunities are obvious – good variety, many different possibilities for recreation, green areas close to housing areas, an attractive city environment etc. The challenges involve handling maintenance within a limited budget, providing good place keeping in all areas and to decide which areas are most important and have highest priority. To make best use of the opportunities and to handle the challenges you need solid and accurate policies and tools for park planning and decision making. Green areas in Göteborg

The ”sociotope” concept was invented to complement the accepted concept of the ”biotope” (ecologically defined environment). A sociotope map describes the common everyday life qualities in open space and user preference in 20 different socio-cultural values. The map is created through professional valuation and public dialogue (surveys, interviews etc) Sociotope map

The green areas have a strong potential as a meeting place for the local community – play, recreation, sports, other activities etc. By restoring the green areas and adding new functions to them the entire neighborhood will benefit from it. Neglected maintenance (place-keeping) and lack of development (place-making) need to be addressed for residents to fell happy and proud about their neighborhood.
