  3. When should a firefighter call a Mayday? Lost Trapped In trouble In danger Missing a crew member (PAR)‏ Low on AIR You witness a firefighter lost or in trouble

  4. When do you use the word MAYDAY? ONLY to report lost or trapped firefighters ANY MEMBER may use MAYDAY to report a lost firefighter

  5. Use to report other emergencies on the fireground EMERGENCY TRAFFIC

  6. What are you going to say? Information that you want to say: Mayday, Mayday, Mayday! Location (where you are in the building)‏ Unit (assignment)‏ Name (your full name)‏ Air (how much air you have left)‏ Resources (what you need for rescue)‏

  7. Information gathered by the Incident Commander Last reported work area? Who is calling Mayday? How much AIR do they have left? Any special equipment needed for rescue? Where is their partner(s)‏

  8. Dispatchers Role in a Mayday MAYDAY Protocol Additional alarm (12 + people) Monitor all radio channels Send two or more ambulances Additional Chief Officers Tech Rescue Team Tech Rescue Vehicle

  9. Rapid Intervention Team IC records RIT entry time RIT announces when they have located the trapped firefighter(s) RIT shares removal or delay issues RIT shares when heading out of building RIT shares when they are out of building Then Conduct PAR

  10. IAP change to Rescue Branch The IC becomes the Rescue Branch Director Four Step Radio Process Four Step process will avoid confusion during IAP Change

  11. Why a Rescue Branch? Span of Control Manage the Rescue Request additional resources to support the rescue

  12. Role of NEW Incident Commander MUST maintain control Make sure that crews make channel change Start accounting for everyone on the fireground Call for a PAR and conduct a PAR Support the Rescue Branch Reinforce firefighting efforts!

  13. Go Out and Practice, be ready to make a difference when things go - “From bad to awful”
