3. A Little Bit About Broome Originally founded in the late 1880’s as a pearling port, Broome boasts a multicultural population lured here by the promise of finding their fortunes. Koepanger, Malay, Chinese, Japanese, European and Aboriginal cultures have all blended to create a captivating and colourful personality that is the heart and soul of Broome.

A welcoming of people onto country is culturally important to Yawuru people to sustain MabujunuLiyarn (Good Feeling) between both visitors and Traditional Owners. Our land is very ancient and covers vast areas from Wirkinmirre (WillieCreek) in the north: south through Minyirr (Broome) and east past Mangalagun (Crab Creek) and south to Warrawan (Barn Hill). We trust that you will all have a great time and enjoy the unique cultural diversity Broome has to offer. We further wish those visitors a safe journey in their future travels. Garlia! European Settlement of Broome 1688 - William Dampier the navigator, explorer, buccaneer and distinguished chronicler of the seven seas is credited for first visiting the region in 1688 and his meticulous journal from his travels is what later inspired the first ‘official’ voyage of discovery. 1699 - Dampier returned but after an altercation with curious aboriginals, in which a native was killed, was forced to hurriedly depart the area. 1870’s - Dampier’s journals were enough to stimulate interest in the areas rich pearl shell beds. There was a growing pearling industry in the waters off north-western Australia with the largest base of operations being located in Cossack, about 700km from what was to become Broome.

European Timeline continued 1879 - Charles Harper suggested to the Legislative Council that Roebuck Bay be set up as a port with facilities for the pearling industry. 1883 -John Forrest selected a town site on Roebuck Bay just east of Dampier Creek where three native wells existed and predicted this site would become the Capital of the Kimberley. 1883 - the town site of Broome was proclaimed and named after the colony’s Governor, Frederick N. Broome. 1886 - The first sale of town lots took place and two years later Broome was gazetted as a port. 1889 - a new telegraph cable was established at Roebuck Bay, linking the isolated colony direct with England, via Singapore, India, Aden, Egypt, Malta and Gibraltar.

Yawuru Peoples Timeline • 40,000 years ago - the Yawuru People started living in the Broome region, in Western Australia • 1800 • 1994 - first Native title claim • 2002 Tribunal mediation • 2004 notification, changes • 2005 mediation • 2006 determination • 2008 appeals • 2010 Indigenous Land Use Agreements signed to acknowledge that the recognises that the Yawuru people as the rightful native title holders, showing they successfully maintained their traditional laws and customs in relation to the land and waters of Broome

8. Climate – European Style Dry Season - May To October May is classed as the start of the‘dryseason’ and traditionally the most popular time to visit. Whilst the inhabitants of the southern parts of Australia are experiencing winter, Broome days are generally fine with temperatures in the vicinity of the 20’s to low 30’s. Humidity levels are low and the nights are cool with overnight temperatures ranging in the teens with temperatures rarely dropping below 5C. Broome does not usually experience any significant rain at this time of the year. Tropical 'Wet' Summer – November To April Contrary to popular belief, Broome does not experience constant rain fall during the ‘wet season’ but generally heavy, short downpours usually in the afternoons or late evening with little (if any) rain before mid December. The build up of humidity creates the perfect environment for mind blowing lightning shows and spectacular sunsets with most of the annual rainfall received from January through to March. Daytime temperatures during ‘the wet’ are in the mid 30’s, with the overnight temperature averaging around the mid 20’s. Many tours operate year round although some attractions cannot be accessed due to closed roads and local flooding. Broome’s tropical climate of hot, humid summers and warm winters has something for everyone to enjoy. Whether it’s the perfect sunshine days of the ‘dry’ or the dazzling lightning shows of the ‘wet’, whatever the weather, relax, enjoy and … let yourself go.

10. Climate – The Six Seasons of Yawuru... The traditional owners of our land identify 6 seasons around the Broome region these consist of: 1. Mankala December to March is the wet season. During the rainy season you will experience magnificent sunsets and amazing lightening displays as the rain replenishes the land. 2. Marul During April the rain begins to deplete and the weather is still humid and hot. Big tides and abundant water in the area encourage rapid growth in the natural landscape 3. Wirralbu At the start of May the cooler winds begin to come off the desert and dew forms at night, marking the beginning of the winter. 4. Barrgana In June and August the beginning of the dry season is discernible with a drop in temperature, starry nights and blue skies. 5. Wirlburu The days start to warm up in September and the nights are still cool. A mist begins to form over the ocean and the area becomes dry and thirsty. 6. Larja The build up of the wet begins in October in anticipation of the rain. The humidity begins to build and the days heat up.
