Dialogue 5 “The Apes at the Zoo” by William Sorley, age 11 • Chimpanzee: Chimps seem lazy, and sometimes crazy. • Gorilla: Gorillas are hairy and kind of scary. • Orangutan: And those silly orangutans seem to bounce like boomerangs • Chimpanzee: I like to watch the apes at the zoo ‘cause they like to play monkey see-monkey do!
Go Ape! • The ape house has that big band jazz. It makes you want to dance. The primate beat is oh, so sweet. It puts you in a trance. The apes react when silver back begins to thump his chest. ‘Cause he’s the king of ape house swing. They know that he’s the best. • And once that beat takes hold of you, you simply can’t escape. There’s only one thing you can do. • Go Ape! Go Ape!
Chimpanzee picks a pair of sticks and beats them on the ground. Orangutan, that forest man, starts stampin’ all around. The beat starts low, but starts to grow as all the gibbons sing. • Gorillas bop, bonobos hop, those apes can really swing! • And once that beat takes hold of you, you simply can’t escape. There’s only one thing you can do. • Go Ape! Go Ape! Go Ape!
