Feel free to borrow these books, but please return them. State Distinguished Achievement Graduation Requirements English-4 Mathematics-4 Science-4 Social Studies-3.5 Economics-.5 Health-.5 Physical Education-1 Fine Arts-1 Speech-.5 Technical Credit-1 Other Languages-3 Electives-3 Total Credits- 26 State Credits • PLUS • Four of the following advanced measures are required: • A score of 3 or above on any College Board Advanced Placement Exam • A grade of 3 or higher on courses that count for college credit, including tech prep programs • A commended (semi-finalist or finalist) score on the PSAT • Locally articulated courses identified in a local tech-prep articulation agreement between a college and a school district.
Mathematics The Recommended Program requires: • Algebra I • Geometry • Algebra II • Additional SBOE approved Math course
Science The Recommended Program requires: • Biology • Chemistry • Physics • Additional Science Elective (, Aquatic Science, Astronomy, Forensics, IPC , etc.)
Social Studies The Recommended Program requires: • World Geography • World History • US History • US Government (+ Economics)
Fine Arts • Art • Dance • Choir • Theatre • Band
Physical Education 1 Credit Required for Graduation 4 total credits are allowed for graduation purposes. The following substitutes for PE in the FALL Only • Marching Band • Drill Team • Cheerleading Athletics may substitute for up to 4 credits of PE. Dance 1 may count as PE or Fine Arts Credit

Athletics • High School athletics are very competitive. • Students who are not currently playing a sport either in middle school or on a competitive team should contact the appropriate coach prior to registering for that sport. Contact information is on the “Athletics and Fine Arts Options” online.
Speech Professional Communications is a ½ credit requirement.
Technical Credits 1 Credit required We have many Tech credits! See pg. 2 of your Program of Studies for a list of possible Courses. You may combine 2- 1 semester Classes for your 1 full credit or take one of the full year courses.

How credits are awarded Every class you are in counts!! At the end of the semester, every class with a grade above 70 you receive ½ a credit. Every class with a grade below 70 you receive 0credits and a 0 is factored into your GPA! Your goal: Credit in every class you take each semester you are in high school.
To be promoted: You need a total of 6 credits at the end of your freshman year. Basically, that means passing 6 of your classes first semester and 6 of your classes second semester. Remember that too many absences in any class could cause you to lose credit. You may need to do “seat time” to regain credit. Attendance is important!!!
6 credits = Sophomore 26 credits to graduate **You retake only those courses you fail that are required for graduation.**
If You Want To Do Several Years Of An Activity, Read This! It can be difficult to be able to include several years of any activity such as choir, band, athletics, theater, but it IS possible. You will probably need to be creative with your 4 year plan and do some summer school and/or online classes to be able to fit in all your electives and required courses. See your counselor for help.
Get a Jump on High School Several summer courses for credit will be offered, such as: Health Professional Communications Digital Multimedia And others…… ***See your counselor in the Spring for an official list. The information will also be available on line on the district website soon after Spring Break***
Pre-AP/AP Classes Pre-Advanced (PAP) courses are designed to prepare students for the entry into Advanced Placement (AP) courses and to meet the unique needs of qualified students. Basic content is the same as the regular course, but instruction allows for more in-depth and accelerated pacing. Preparation time (outside of school) is estimated to be 1- 1 ½ hours per class period.
AP and PAP Programs • GCISD is allowing open enrollment in PAP and AP programs, however it is always best to consider outside activities, previous academic record, and the time commitment required for advanced level courses when making your course selections.
Gifted & Talented • GT students who are already classified as GT do not need to be requalified. • There are several specific areas tested to be qualified as GT in GCISD, including achievement tests, GPA, student motivation, and classroom observations. • GT testing will take place on :August 8 from 9:00-12:00 (The place is to be determined. Parents will be notified of the place.) • If you wish your student to take place in the testing you will need to mark your course selection sheet across the top of the form –GT testing requested.
Off Campus Classes • Some courses are only offered at Grapevine High School and the GCISD Swim Center. A shuttle is provided by the district for students attending CHHS. Please note classes at GHS are noted by +GHS on the CHHS registration sheet. • Gymnastics (Must provide own transportation)
Extra Curricular Activities • Major Time Commitment • College Recognition • Opportunity to build leadership skills. • Socialization • School Spirit!
Hints for Course Selection • Choose classes that will challenge, but not overwhelm you. • Gains in GPA and class rank come from a combination of challenging courses AND good grades. • If a course was too difficult in the past, it is quite possible that the next level course will be too difficult as well. Talk with your teacher for advice. • Map out a time management plan identifying preparation time for classes, time requirements for extracurricular activities and free time.

This Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) course is designed to prepare students for success in Advanced Placement (AP) English courses and to meet the unique needs of the district's gifted and talented language arts students. Though built upon the regular English I course, Pre-AP English I offers a differentiated curriculum that includes a wider range and a greater depth of subject matter. Its purpose is to increase the student's effectiveness as a reader, speaker, listener, and writer by emphasizing higher-level and critical-thinking skills and by providing opportunities for creative and productive thinking. Emphasis is placed on quality literature, the exploration of literary themes through writing, and the methods of discourse. Description of what you will be studying in the course

Step 2: Required courses - ENGLISH • Please mark the English class that you wish to take next year. Four years of English are required for graduation. • English I – GT, Pre AP or Regular • English II – GT, Pre AP, or Regular • English III – GT, AP, Pre AP, Regular • English IV – AP, Dual, Regular • Dual counts as regular weight.
Required courses - MATH • Please mark the Math class that you wish to take next year. Students are required to take Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, at the regular or PAP level, to graduate on the recommended plan. Students must take a 4th year of math. Other Math classes available: • Math Models, Independent Study in Mathematics, • Pre Calculus, Pre Calculus Pre AP, AP Statistics, AP Calculus, AP Calculus AB or BC, AP Comp Sci II Advanced Quantitative Reasoning • Dual College Math–REGULAR WEIGHT
Required courses - SCIENCE • Please mark the Science class that you wish to take next year. Students are required to take four Sciences courses consisting of • Biology (Freshman) • Chemistry (Sophomore) • Physics (Junior) • Science Elective Biology, Chemistry and Physics may be taken at the regular and Pre AP levels.
Required courses – Social Studies • Please mark the Social Studies class that you wish to take next year. Students are required to take the following classes to fulfill requirements for the recommended graduation plan: • World Geography (Freshman) • World History (Sophomore) • United States History (Junior) • U.S. Government and Economics (Senior) Many of the classes listed above can be taken at the regular, Pre AP, and AP levels.

STEP 3:Elective courses • Elective courses are designed to give you choices in the additional classes for your schedule. It is a great idea to take classes of interest, but elective classes can also be used to see where you might have additional interests and strengths.
Elective courses • Make sure to fill in enough courses to make a full 7 period schedule.
Forms The counselors will take these forms back to their schools and enter your course selections into Skyward. In August you will pick up your schedule on schedule pick up day.
