  2. X-Ray • He wears glasses. • He is African-American. • Leader of the group at Camp Green Lake but is the second shortest.

  3. Stanley Yelnats • Stanley is caucasian. • His name is a palindrome. • He is the 4th Stanley Yelnats in his family.

  4. Zero • Puffy/ afro looking hairstyle. • He is short.

  5. Zig-Zag • Has a wacky hairstyle. • He is white.

  6. Mr. Sir • Eats many many sunflower seeds in place of smoking • Carries a gun for Yellow Spotted Lizards

  7. Theme • The theme of Holes is about a boy who believes he is always at the wrong place, wrong place. He believes this because of his No-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great- grandfather. As the story goes on Stanley grows and he makes friends with most of the campers. He receives the nickname “Caveman.” In the end Camp Green Lake gets in trouble for it’s violations. And Stanley and Zero go home with Stanley’s lawyer. He also finds a trunk with gold and jewelry which is worth millions in today’s time. He splits the jewelry 50/50 with Hector Zeroni a.k.a. “Zero.”

  8. Setting • The story Holes takes place in a desert. Camp Green Lake is a place for juveniles to get punished or to “build character.”

  9. Camp Green Lake? • If you’ve never READ the BOOK Holes before, this is for you. The genre of Holes is nonfiction. Camp Green Lake is a place for juveniles. It is harsh and hot. The campers dig to “build character” but the real reason is that the warden wants to find treasure.

Problem Solution • Hector a.k.a. “Zero not being able to read or write. • Mr. Sir quit smoking. • The Warden wanting to find treasure. • Stanley a.k.a. “Caveman” teaching Zero how to read and write. • Replaces addiction with smoking to sunflower seeds. • The Warden makes the campers dig harder.

  11. The Author: Louis Sachar • Born in East Meadow, New York in 1954. • Is a law graduate. • J.D. Salinger, Margeret Atwood and Kurt Vonnegut were just some of his favorite authors. • Attended Antioch College in Ohio.
