What is the most effective way for parents to persuade children ages between 7-8 in Rosyth School to eat two servings of (1/4 of a round plate) tomato, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, spinachand potato everyday?(healthy vegetables)
Why is my study needed? • Parents want to raise healthy children. • Most children do not like vegetables, but, some are very stubborn and picky and will never eat vegetables no matter how their parents coax them. • Benefits parents as they will have more ideas to introduce more vegetables to their children.
Observation • I have notice that some people who does not eat vegetables claims that they are carnivorous only, and that they cannot do without meat but can with vegetables. Why is this so? • People this days does not know the importancy of vegetables as they find it bitter and have a ‘weird taste’.
Literature Review • The most common period time for picky eating is when they are aged 7-8. A picky eater: • may complain or whine about what is served • refuses certain foods, especially vegetables and meats • pushes foods around the plate • hides foods or gives them to a pet under the table • eats enough total foods and calories per day for normal growth.
Literature Review • What causes it? • Children of all ages commonly have a few food dislikes. A picky eater is a child with many food dislikes. • At age 2 or 3, up to 20 percent of children are picky eaters. It is normal for most young children to dislike foods with a bitter or spicy taste. Sometimes children dislike foods because of their color, but more often it's because they are difficult to chew. Children accept tender meats better than tough ones, and well-cooked vegetables better than raw. • Occasionally a child who gags on large pieces of all foods has large tonsils that make it difficult to swallow.
Literature Review Solutions • A solution might be to offer a variety of raw or still-crunchy cooked vegetables and let your kids choose what they want. • The "two-bite" approach. Insist that your children take at least two bites of a new food. But also try to keep their tastes in mind when you decide which vegetables to serve. And if they still refuse, don't be tempted to force your children to eat their vegetables. In fact, many adults report that they won't eat some vegetables just because they were required to do so as a child.
What method would you use to collect your data? • Survey to parents and children aged between 7-8 • Interview between relatives who face this problem too. • I will give recommendations for parents on the various ways to encourage children to eat vegetables and recipes.
Time period to carry out activity • 3 weeks( For survey and interview ) • 2 months to complete the whole project • Resources used in literature review • Healthy Eating (Harvard Special Health Report). Annual 2008 p14(3). • http://www.bcbsm.com/index/healthy-living/tips/kids/persuading-kids-to-eat.html • Thank You !!!
